Comparative Education Society in Europe
XXIV CESE Conference
16 – 19 August 2010 Uppsala, Sweden
Dear colleagues,
On behalf of the CESE Executive Committee and the Local Organizing Committee, it is a great pleasure to invite you to participate in the XXIV CESE Conference which will be held from 16 – 19 August 2010 at Uppsala University, Sweden.
The theme of the Conference is:
ENLIGHTENMENT, CREATIVITY, AND EDUCATION:
POLITIES, POLITICS, AND PERFORMANCES
- The World in Europe - Europe in the World -
‘Education’ is changing rapidly under international, regional and national pressures. We are told, often, by the media that we live in a world in which creativity is highly valued because of the globalised knowledge economy. Maybe. But what kind of creativity is currently expected from education systems? Are there alternatives? Similarly, it has been asserted that the Enlightenment project has failed. Maybe. But which one? The Scottish, the Swedish, or Buddha’s? What forms of enlightenment are encouraged in twenty-first century education systems? Where and why – and indeed – how and by whom?
These historically important themes (and their complex relations with politics and societies and economies) will inform the Working Groups of the conference in which we warmly invite you to give papers. The Conference – including the Plenary Lectures – will take up questions about new forms of State and educational governance; new expectations about ‘performativity’ for children, students, teachers and universities; and the power of neo-liberal agendas to shape education. A crucial strategic question is whether at the Conference we are analysing promising educational ‘solutions’ to the ‘problem’ of globalisation; or whether we are seeing, comparatively and historically, the construction of a new educational crisis which few academics anticipated.
Do join us and enjoy the lively inter-national and intellectual conversation of a CESE conference. Certainly consider giving a paper in one of the Working Groups which are very like week-long seminars. The timetable of the Conference will also be arranged in such a way that you will have a moment or two to reflect thoughtfully on the remarkable summer nights of Sweden.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL IN UPPSALA!
