Pre-conference Tour
South-west Sweden – a mixture of modern farming and old history
Friday 6 June–Sunday 8 June, 2008
The trip starts with a city tour of Gothenburg at 10 am on 6 June. It takes you through forage-intensive farmland, semi-natural grassland with diverse flora and fauna, wetlands and modern dairy and beef farming countryside. We visit historic Läckö Castle on the Kålland peninsula by Lake Vänern, the largest lake in Sweden, followed by nature walks through floral grassland and visits to medieval churches on Kinnekulle by Vänern. The tour also includes visits to three research stations. Finally, the bus takes you to Uppsala (arrival approx. 6 pm on 8 June) where the conference will take place.
Price: SEK 3325 (excl. VAT). The fee includes shared accommodation in a double room and breakfast, lunch and dinner according to the programme. If you prefer single room, the price will be SEK 3725 (Excl VAT).

Post-conference Tour
Northern Sweden – a presentation of the Land of the Midnight Sun
Thursday 12 June–Wednesday 18 June, 2008
Goal: To demonstrate natural and climatic conditions in Fennoscandia and its possibility to produce food, wood, paper and hydroelectric power and provide attractive living conditions.
We will take you from Uppsala 650 km north along the Baltic to:
- Visit beef cattle farms preserving the unique coast landscape
- Learn how to produce and ‘ensile’ fish in the past and for the future
- Demonstrate modern agricultural research at the Röbäcksdalen Agricultural Research Centre outside the city of Umeå
- Learn about production of paper pulp at Obbola Paper Industry
Turning north-west towards the border of Norway, we will:
- Visit the largest hydroelectric plant in Sweden at Stornorrforsen
- Taste the best hard matured cheeses of Sweden
- Demonstrate gold and silver mining in the heart of the mining district
- Visit the land of the Sami and learn about reindeer farming
- Try river trout fishing in Lappland
- See the Midnight Sun in Arjeplog
Following the mountain and lake area back to Uppsala, we will:
- Visit the Trotter Education and Research Centre at Wången
- Learn about the development of small-scale, farm-produced and labelled food
- See old traditions of music and local homemade textiles
- Visit areas under farm development thanks to EU funding
- Try Viking rowing and life along the river Ljusnan
We welcome you to six interesting days with a journey through unique parts of Sweden, learning about our history, nature, past and present industries, and meeting people full of ideas about how to survive in tough climatic conditions.
The tour starts on 12 June at 2.15 pm at Ultuna Campus, SLU, Uppsala. You will be back at Stockholm Arlanda International Airport on 18 June at approx. 4 pm.
